Ted Ginn Jr. has been arrested and charged with a DWI. Ginn Jr. is a former NFL wide receiver and currently occupies the head coaching role of the Columbus Aviators. Following his arrest, UFL president and CEO Russ Brandon released a statement.
"We are aware of an incident involving Head Coach Ted Ginn Jr. over the weekend and are in the process of gathering more information," Brandon told local news station WSYX, via NBC Sports.
According to WSYX, Ginn Jr. was stopped around 1 am for "allegedly failing to yield to a turn." He is then alleged to have failed a sobriety test shortly after. Following his arrest, Ginn Jr. was released on a $1000 bond.
Ginn Jr's arrest occurred hours before the Aviators were set to face the Dallas Renegades on Sunday, April 12. "Offensive coordinator Todd Haley will handle the head coaching duties for the Aviators game on Sunday," Russ Brandon confirmed in his statement.
The Aviators ultimately fell to the Renegades, 28-23. They're now 0-3 to start the season.
Ted Ginn Jr. Has Issued a Public Apology
On Sunday, Ginn Jr. issued a
"I made a serious mistake and take full responsibility for my actions. I've always believed in accountability and now it's my turn to live that standard," Ginn Jr. wrote. "I understand the responsibility that comes with being a leader & role model. Falling short of this is not something I take lightly. I'm committed to learning from this, making better decisions, and earning back the trust of my players, our organization, and the fans."
Ginn Jr. then continued by thanking his family and the UFL for their support following the incident.
"I appreciate the support of my family and the United Football League, and I respect the process as it moves forward," the statement continued. "My focus now is on taking the necessary steps to grow from this and represent the Columbus Aviators and this community the right way."
Prior to his role as head coach of the Aviators, Ginn Jr. spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He suited up for the Dolphins, 49ers, Panthers, Cardinals, Saints and Bears.
There is currently not further information regarding Ginn Jr's arrest, or whether it will impact his long-term role with the Aviators.
