The accident took place on the Panamericana Sur highway, close to Lima's Punta Negra district at around 6 a.m. According to Infobae, both Vega and López were traveling back to Chincha, approximately 125 miles south of Lima. They had previously traveled to Peru's capital city to attend Shakira's concert scheduled for Sunday, February 16. However, the event had to be postponed and then re-scheduled due to illness.

Estephany Cabezas Vega and Joyce Estephany López were traveling inside their vehicle alongside Joana Almeida. All of a sudden, a bus collided with their vehicle, tragically killing Vega on the spot. According to El Comercio, López was rushed to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her wounds on the way. Almeida survived the accident. The bus driver, identified as Jorge Andrés Castro Javier, was injured and is now in stable condition.

Families of the deceased women have been left devastated following the fatal accident. López's mother, María, recalled the last words he heard from her daughter.

"She told me, 'Mom, I'm leaving,' and she left on Saturday at around 5 a.m.," Maria said, in tears. "I never imagined that I would never see her again." According to Maria, the vehicle where her daughter was traveling suffered a mechanical issue on the highway. After the vehicle stopped, the bus allegedly hit them, having no room to break on time.

The accident is currently under investigation by Peruvian police.

Concert Postponed

The very same day of the Sunday, February 16 concert, Shakira issued a statement, confirming that she had been experiencing health issues. This, unfortunately, led to the concert being postponed, now confirmed to take place on November 15, 2025.

"I am sorry to inform you all that last night I had to go to the ER for an abdominal issue and am currently hospitalized," Shakira shared on social media. "The doctors whose care I am currently under have communicated that I am not in good enough condition to perform this evening."

"I am very sad to not be able to take the stage today. I've been looking forward to reuniting with my incredible fans here in Peru. I hope to be released and well tomorrow so I'm able to perform."
