Following the news of Fernandez's passing, the Dolphins released a
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Manny Fernandez, a member of the 1972 Perfect Team, a two-time Super Bowl champion, Ring of Honor member and an anchor of the Dolphins' legendary No-Name Defense," the statement reads. "His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins' success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team's three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game."
The statement wraps up by acknowledging Fernandez's role in the team's history.
"Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history."
Fernandez was a key member of the Dolphins' Super Bowl-winning team, both in 1972 and 1973. However, it was his performance during '72 that was his standout moment. He ended the game with 17 tackles and a sack to help his team secure a 14-7 victory over Washington.
Fernandez joined the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie in 1968. He spent his entire career with the franchise, emerging as a key part of its history. During his rookie season, Fernandez played in 13 games, starting 11.
A slight role change saw Fernandez line up as a left defensive tackle as a sophomore, a role that stuck with him for six of his eight years in the league. However, it was his third season with Miami that was among his most productive, as Ferandez was named 10th in MVP voting for the 1970 season. Quarterback John Brodie ultimately scooped the prize.
Fernadez's final season came in 1975, when he was 29 years old. He suited up for 10 games, starting four of them. He retired a two-time champion.
