A father and son duo have been arrested for the kidnapping of two U.S. Forest Service employees. As reported by the New York Post, they had taken them hostage in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in northern California.
The suspects were identified as 49-year-old Joseph Charles Henrichsen and his son Phoenix. They had allegedly taken the two workers hostage, held them in bondage via zip ties, and held them at gunpoint.
Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue of Siskiyou County confirmed the workers, who have not been named, were held inside a trailer near a lake. According to FOX 40, the workers were apparently doing seasonal work when they were held hostage.
Authorities were first made aware of the shocking hostage situation at around 11 am local time from Henrichsen himself. He confirmed to operators that he had firearms and ammunition. Hendrichsen asked to speak with the FBI.
This led to a coordinated effort between local, state, and federal agencies. The FBI academy in Quantico, Virginia, also supplied a hostage rescue team to help support the rescue efforts.
An hours-long confrontation and standoff then ensued. Authorities confirmed in a press conference that the two workers were safely recovered in the morning following the kidnapping.
A local law enforcement official explained, "I talked about it's a dynamic situation, right? So at any point, it can go from under control to very dangerous. We felt we had time, better to get them spun up and out here just in case."
Sheriff LaRue also added that the rescue efforts were "probably the smoothest thing" he'd seen in many years.
It is currently unclear as to the motivations of the kidnappers. This case is ongoing, and the story is currently developing.
