Is Jessica Lange Retiring?
As Entertainment Weekly reports, Rolling Stone asked Lange what roles she would like to play in the coming years, and her answer was a little shocking.
"I actually feel like I'm coming to an end," she said. "And maybe it's not a bad way to end, you know, the last film being Long Day's Journey Into Night and playing Mary Tyrone."
However, Lange is not stepping away from the spotlight just yet. She said there have been some projects that "have been in the works forever." One is about Marlene Dietrich's later career. Lange said the project would explore themes from one of her recent television projects, Feud: Bette and Joan. The actress played Joan Crawford on the limited series opposite Susan Sarandon, who played Bette Davis.
"We touched on this with Ryan [Murphy]'s project Feud with Joan and Bette about what happens when an actress gets to a certain age, and they're no longer viable," Lange continued. "I mean, that was the theme with Bette and Joan. That is a recurrent theme for a lot of women, especially of that period, and in this case, it's Dietrich and what she did, where she moved on from when Hollywood was kind of finished with her."
Lange Also Returned to "American Horror Story"
While Lange has found it difficult to get the projects she wants off the ground, she has had no problem finding roles on TV. Ryan Murphy asked Lange to return for the 13th season of American Horror Story. However, Lange said she would come back to the hit anthology series under one condition.
"Ryan Murphy talked me into coming back," Lange said in September. "First, he talked to me about playing [season 1's] Constance, which I think was his favorite character that I did. But I said I'll come back if I can do all four characters."
