TV News Anchor Mark Spain Dies After Battle With Cancer

Mark Spain, a prolific news anchor, has died aged 64 on December 18.

The news anchor died after a battle with pancreatic cancer only three weeks after being diagnosed. His family has had precious little time since learning of his illness and are heartbroken.

News of his passing was announced

on his Facebook in a post written by his family. ABC 13 then echoed the news
through their own post.

Mark Spain had anchored for decades before his death. He was most recently a news anchor for ABC affiliate WSET-TV, where he was a weekday news anchor. His face was one many associated with good journalism and news.

The statement from his wife began with his iconic opening, "Hello sunshines! It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my loving husband Mark."

"Our family along with the city of Lynchburg lost a man of hope, someone who loves his city and stood for equality, treating others with respect and kindness," she continued.

She also spoke of his battle with pancreatic cancer, "He fought hard, he stayed positive throughout the battle and wasn't afraid. We have comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering, it was not easy watching him fight for his life and battle this disease, but he was not alone."

Media Figures Post Tributes To Mark Spain

Kirsten Mirand also posted about Mark Spain's death. She was a former colleague of Spain's. She wrote, "To know Mark Spain was to know positivity, faith & kindness. He was the anchor at my last news station in VA. More than a gifted journalist, he was an incredible person who inspired everyone he met."

Even Danville Police Department shared in the mourning. They wrote, "DanvillePD extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of @ABC13News anchor Mark Spain. He was a familiar face on WSET each evening in many homes throughout Danville, and very professionally covered several news stories about the Department. Mark will be missed."

So many places, people, and communities have been affected by Mark Spain's passing. He was a beloved journalist who will be dearly missed in the news.
