An Olympian has tragically died after crashing during a cycling race in Japan. Now, tributes are pouring in for the late medalist Toshiaki Fushimi.

The incident happened on July 18. The 50-year-old Olympian was participating in the Matsusaka Keirin tournament. That's when, according to Metro, Fushimi crashed into a barrier while trying to avoid a crash in front of him.
Sadly, the barrier caused the Olympian to crash himself. It gave him life-threatening injuries to his cervical vertebrae and skull. Fushimi passed away a day later from his injuries. Now, tributes are pouring in for the Olympian.
Olympian Dies, tributes Pour In
"It is truly heartbreaking that he lost his life in an accident during a race," the chairman of the Japan Keirin Association (JKA), Hiroshi Kido, told The Independent in a statement. "We will reconfirm our safety measures and thoroughly ensure fair and safe races."
Prior to his death, Fushimi had a long career in cycling. He previously participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The Olympian took home silver that year. Fushimi made his debute in cycling in 1995 and pursued his passion until his death.
Several tributes poured in on social media. Malaysian retired professional cyclist Josiah Ng Onn Lam wrote on Instagram.
"R.I.P. Fushimi San ?," he wrote. "Toshiaki Fushimi wasn't just a competitor. He was one of the best keirin riders Japan has ever produced. Grand Prix winner. Olympic Silver Medalist. A true professional on the track."
"We raced against each other for years. That kind of rivalry builds a respect that doesn't fade," he continued. "Devastated to hear he lost his life doing what he loved. My thoughts are with his family and the entire keirin community in Japan. Rest in peace, champion. ????."
Meanwhile, another person wrote, "Devastating to hear this news. Fushimi San. We competed with each other for many years. He is one of the legends of Keirin. I have so much respect for him. Rest in peace Fushimi San. Sending my condolences to his family and the entire Keirin community."
And another wrote, "R. I. P. Toshiaki Fushimi (JPN), who won the silver medal in the men's team sprint at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, has died following a crash during a keirin race.
May he rest in peace."
