Erin Patterson, 50, reportedly invited five family members over for a meal in 2023, although her ex-husband, Simon Patterson, never showed up. All four guests fell critically ill after eating the food and emergency services took them to hospital. Three of the family members died, and the one who survived, Ian Wilkinson, spent seven weeks recovering in hospital. In May 2024, Police reportedly said they believed the sick guests shared symptoms with poisoning from Death Caps.

At the time, authorities charged Patterson with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder. According to a report by The Guardian, she now faces three murder charges and one attempted murder charge. She stands accused of killing Simon's parents, Don and Gail Patterson, and his aunt, Heather Wilkinson.

An Attempted Murder Charge Was Dropped At The Trial

Justice Christopher Beale reportedly told the jury that Patterson is no longer accused of attempting to murder her ex-husband. He also said they should remove any consideration of those charges. Owing to the media attention, Beale asked the jurors to change the channel if they saw the case on TV and to ignore papers or online coverage. "It's your duty to decide this case only on the basis of that evidence," he reportedly said. Beale stressed, "Shut down any conversations with anybody, family, friends, who want to know more."

Per the New York Post, the Jury consists of ten men and five women. The law in Victoria forbids media from publishing any detail that could lead to them being identified.

Beale also explained that it's not up to Erin Patterson to prove her innocence. It's up to the prosecution to prove the charges rallied against her. Per the Guardian's report, the jury's decision must be unanimous and the prosecution must 'prove four elements beyond reasonable doubt.'

Those elements are that Patterson caused the death of the alleged victim. She did it deliberately, with the intent to kill or cause serious injury, and without any legal justification.
