Speaking with Esquire for a profile published Wednesday, Oct. 7, the 37-year-old actor detailed an injury that nearly cost him a limb.
While filming in Bulgaria, Powell suffered a ruptured tendon in his hand during a scene in which he got stabbed in the hand, he told the outlet.
Powell didn't realize the prop knife had injured him and continued filming as scheduled.
Esquire reported that Powell's hand swelled to the point where he went to an emergency room in Bulgaria. He was then diagnosed with a septic infection and needed emergency surgery.
"This is the real deal. You could wake up without a hand," Powell said doctors told him in the hospital.
Actor Nearly Lost Hand After Scary On-Set Injury
Powell returned to The Running Man set after undergoing a successful surgery. Movie writers worked his bandaged hand into the script.
The Running Man, based on the 1982 Stephen King novel of the same name, is set in a dystopian, near-future America dominated by corporatocracy and media surveillance.
Powell plays the movie's protagonist, who enters a televised game show with a billion-dollar prize if he can survive 30 days while being hunted by anyone in the country.
The action movie, a remake of the titular 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzennager, outpaced its predecessor at the box office.
The Running Man raked in nearly $70 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, nearly double the 1987 version. Still, given its $110 million budget, the film is considered a commercial failure.
Powell told Esquire that he blamed the movie's financial struggles on Paramount's decision to lay off "an entire marketing department a month before our movie came out."
The "Twisters" star told the outlet that he has already put The Running Man's shortcomings behind him and is looking forward to future projects.
Powell will star in the upcoming comedy, The Comeback King, directed by Judd Apatow. The film is scheduled to release in theaters in February 2027.
Powell is also teaming with legendary filmmaker JJ Abrams on The Great Beyond, an upcoming sci-fi film.
