Tim Allen Reveals What’s Stopped ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot

If you grew up in the 90s, or even the early 2000s, chances are you have fond childhood memories of Home Improvement.

If you grew up in the 90s, or even the early 2000s, chances are you have fond childhood memories of Home Improvement. Chances are, you've also been a little excited at sporadic chatter regarding a potential reboot over the years.

During a recent conversation with US Weekly, Tim Allen, who starred as "Tim 'The Toolman' Taylor" on the show, explained why a reboot appears to be highly unlikely.

"They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys," Allen said. "They've got their own issues. I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That's a little challenging right now, to put it mildly."

It's worth noting that none of the boys from the show are currently involved in acting. Zachery Ty Bryan has been dealing with a string of legal issues in recent years. Taran Noah Smith hasn't acted since Home Improvement ended, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas hasn't been on screen once in the last two decades.

Finding a way to get everyone on the same page, all at the same time, would be near impossible. Therefore, the only way to spin a reboot would be to focus it on Tim, without his family around. At that point, it wouldn't be the Home Improvement we all know and love.

Patricia Richardson Also Shot Down a 'Home Improvement' Reboot

Patricia Richardson, who played Allen's wife "Jill" on the show, has previously shot down any chance of a reboot. Her comments came during an appearance on the "Back To The Best" podcast back in 2024.

"It was so weird, I would hear he was coming out publicly and saying this stuff about everyone was on board to do a Home Improvement reunion, but he never asked me and he never asked Jonathan [Taylor Thomas]," Richardson said.

The actress then went on to share her understanding of why the show wouldn't be making a comeback.

"I mean, Zach is now a felon," she continued. "Taran hasn't acted since he left the show; he's not an actor anymore. And Jonathan's not really interested in acting. He wants to direct and write. And we don't have [Taylor neighbor] Wilson [the late Earl Hindman]."

Despite all the reasons holding back a Home Improvement reboot, there's no doubt the fans would welcome the show back with open arms. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's on the cards. As such, the show may be resigned to being part of our longing for nostalgia, and in truth, that's not such a bad thing.
