Three people in Louisiana have been arrested and charged after they brought a dead three-year-old child to a local hospital on February 13. An autopsy later revealed that the three-year-old had signs of having endured physical abuse, leading to the arrests.

statement issued on Wednesday, March 5, by the Bienville Parish Sheriff's Office, it was revealed that authorities arrived at the Bienville Medical Center on February 13. Back then, hospital staff reported that three individuals had brought a dead three-year-old to the emergency room.An autopsy was conducted at the time and, according to the statement, signs of physical abuse were made apparent. Investigators followed up on the suspected physical abuse and were able to gather evidence that led to the three people being arrested. They are now being accused of cruelty in connection with the three-year-old as well as a different 14-year-old who resided alongside them at their residence in Lucky, Louisiana.
Arrested And Charged
Kewanna Monique Lard, 44, Dewanequa Monique Nykeria Lard, 23, and Szysznyk DeWayne Phillips, 48, were charged with cruelty to juveniles. Additionally, Kewanna and Dewanequa were charged with second-degree cruelty to juveniles and obstruction of justice. They were booked into the Bienville Parish Jail. Their bond was set at $100,000 on each count.
On the cruelty to juveniles charge, each of the three people could face up to 20 years in prison. Kewanna and Dewanequa could also face an additional 40 years in prison if they are found guilty of second-degree cruelty to juveniles.
The child was identified by KTBS as Rayshawn Curtis Lard, nicknamed "Nico." His obituary reveals that he was born on October 9, 2021. According to it, Nico "passed away peacefully" on Thursday, February 13, surrounded by his family. This included his mother, siblings, and other family members. It is unclear what relationship Nico had with the three individuals that were arrested.
"Nico was born in Castor La, he was the age of 3 who loved paw patrol," his obituary reads. "He loved his mom, siblings, and cookies. He loved to run around scare the kids and throw his ball."
