The iconic singer owns a 700-acre ranch in Texas that has become a safe haven for horses once set for slaughter.
Nelson stressed the importance of his passion project, "Luck Ranch," in a 2019 interview with KSAT 12 News.
"When you're here, you're in Luck, and when you're not, you're out of Luck," Nelson said.
Each year, tens of thousands of horses are exported out of the US to slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico.
"My horses are probably the luckiest horses in the world. They get hand-fed twice a day, and they were just ready to go to slaughter is probably the last thing they remembered, so they're happy horses," Nelson added.
Over the years, the animal-loving music icon has written several songs about horses.
This includes "Ride Me Back Home," "Beer For My Horses," "A Horse Called Music," and "Wild Horses."
Nelson nestled the 700-acre ranch in his old western town, Luck, which is about 30 miles away from Austin, Texas.
Willie Nelson Owns Massive Movie Set in Texas
Although it never pauses its duty as a horse haven, Luck Ranch often doubles as a movie set.
The ranch previously served as the town of Driscoll, Montana, in the Red Headed Stranger, starring Nelson, and then as Fort Smith, Arkansas, in the miniseries Lonesome Dove, according to Texas Highways.
Luck was initially constructed to be a Western-style movie set, but has developed into a blossoming, yet small town.
Luck now has its own saloon, jail, and several stores.
In 2012, Luck Presents hosted its first show at Luck during South by Southwest, attracting about 700 people.
Gary Clark Jr., James McMurtry, Father John Misty, and Joe Pug all performed at the inaugural festival, which has become an annual tradition.
Luck will host the 15th annual Luck Reunion next year on March 18 and 19. Attendance is capped at 3,500 for both days.
It is unclear whether Nelson will perform at the 2027 edition of the Luck Reunion, as he has in previous years.
