Sometimes kids remind us just how smart and loving they can be. Take Cole Lanclos of Montgomery, Texas, who wrote a poignant get-well-soon letter to his girlfriend, Sherri Rodriguez. Cole is just 10-years-old, but he seems to have the maturity and chivalrousness of someone much older.
Sherri's mother, Nicole Rodriguez, tells Buzzfeed that the fifth graders started "dating" about a year ago after attending the homecoming dance together.
They are close friends who love to attend each other's sports games -- Sherri plays soccer while Cole plays baseball. At a recent game (that, of course, Cole was attending), Sherri got injured and hurt her knee.
Later that evening, Cole decided to do something sweet for his girlfriend. "He came home that night and said, 'I want to write her a letter and get her something to make her feel better,'" Cole's mom, Brandi Lanclos, tells Buzzfeed.
Cole's letter reads:
I'm so sorry that you broke your knee. I will miss watching you play soccer and I'm sorry that you won't be able to play softball for a while. But I know you will heal quickly, and I will get to watch you play again soon. Although you can't play sports, you still make my day when I get to see your beautiful smile.
God has a plan for all of us and sometimes it's hard for us to understand why thing[s] happen to us. My dad tells me that God only allows things to happen that He knows we can handle. You are a pretty, nice, funny, and strong girl that is also a good friend. You will get through this quickly.
Please let me know how I can help during your recovery. I hope you recover fast and get well soon.
At Sherri's next game, where she had to sit on the sidelines, Cole showed up to present her with the letter, a cookie cake and a teddy bear. Brandi Lanclos says that Sherri truly appreciated Cole's gesture. "Her eyes lit up and she started giggling," she shared. "It was a really sweet moment."
Cole's endearing letter has gone viral after Sherri's cousin Gabriella gushed about it on social media.
I think we could all learn a lesson from Cole. Here's to hoping he always stays this generous and sweet, and that Sherri has a speedy recovery!
