On Sunday morning, Mackenzie Rose Colgan, 37, woke up with a plan to kill her family of four and then herself, according to court filings reported by The Washington Post. Unfortunately, she would succeed with a part of her plan as she drowned her baby.

A news release by the Montgomery County Department of Police detailed the arrest. Colgan herself called the police, telling them of what she did. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders escorted the unnamed baby to a local hospital. It succumbed to its injuries and was pronounced dead.

Reports described by The Post describe the harrowing event. It is unclear what caused the therapist to devise such a scheme. She had been in a mental decline for a small while, however. In June, a client of hers asked police to conduct a welfare check, according to a police spokesperson. Colgan said everything was fine.

Therapist Almost Carries Out Horrific Family Murder-Suicide

Per reports described by The Post, she decided to kill her baby first. She announced she was to bathe the baby, and took her upstairs. She prepared a bath for the baby, including the use of a smaller baby tub. That's when she drowned the infant by turning its face away, presumably below the water level.

She held the baby there until she was sure it was dead, she allegedly told police.

Despite the plot to kill her family and then herself, drowning her baby seemed too much for her. She then considered jumping out of the window, although she opted to tell her husband what she had done instead.

The husband ordered her to call the police while he tried to perform CPR on the baby. That's when the police arrived and Colgan was arrested and the baby taken to hospital.

The therapist is being held without bond. It is unknown when she is due back in court, although the investigation is still ongoing. The deceased infant was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. It was supposed to have been conducted Monday.

The outcome of the autopsy is not yet publicly known.
