Cody Johnson prides himself on being cool, calm and collected, both on the road and at home. But there is one time when he admittedly lost his cool, for a really important reason, unintentionally teaching one of his two daughters an unsavory word in the process.

"We were on the backside of the ranch 350 acres," Johnson recalls to Chicago's US99 radio station. "We're on the backside, and there's this pond that's stocked full of bass. We're fishing, and the kids are over here fishing on this side, and I'm tearing them up over here. And I'm going, 'Clara, they're over here, they're over here. Come over here.' So she stands beside me right here, and out of nowhere, the grass next to me starts shaking.
" And I heard it. And all I saw was about that much of him," Johnson continues, measuring a length about a foot long with his hands. "He was about as big around as a beer can, and he was slithering right beside me. And I hollered, 'Clara, f-ing run!' And then I hollered to my wife, 'Throw me that --damn 30-30 right now!' But it was a six-foot rattlesnake, and it scared me. My daughter's right here [beside me].'
Johnson later reveals that Clara ultimately called him out on the story, when he was recalling it to someone else.
"I said, 'I told her, 'Clara, run!' And she said, 'That is not at all what you said, Dad.'"

Cody Johnson's New Single, 'The Fall'
Johnson just had a multi-week, No. 1 "I'm Gonna Love You" hit with Carrie Underwood. He is back at radio with "The Fall." The song, like "I'm Gonna Love You," is from Johnson's Leather Deluxe Edition, out in 2024.
'The Fall' is one of those songs that I feel like should be on a movie soundtrack. ... It should be on a movie soundtrack because it paints that picture of - you can see the struggle to get to the success," Johnson says. "And I think, for me I picture guys like Michael Jordan. You see all the work and all the tired and the angry and the tears and the blood and you get to the successful moment. You can even apply that to relationships too, but it has that that overall movie quality about it."
Johnson will have plenty of chances to perform all of his hits this year. He is currently on his Deluxe Leather Tour. Johnson will also play plenty of fairs and festivals over the summer, including at CMA Fest.
