'The Marsh King's Daughter' Trailer: Daisy Ridley and Garrett Hedlund Star in Wilderness Thriller

From a galaxy far, far away to somewhere in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Star Wars' Daisy Ridley takes to the wilderness in The Marsh King's Daughter, the new thriller from director Neil Burger (Limitless) premiering in theaters on October 6. Ridley stars as a woman whose secret family history leads her on a revenge quest deep in the forest. Co-written by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith, The Marsh King's Daughter also stars Emmy-winner Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One), Tulsa King's Garrett Hedlund and Yellowstone vet Gil Birmingham.

Based on Karen Dionne's best-selling 2017 novelThe Marsh King's Daughter centers on Helena (Ridley), a woman hiding a terrible secret from her husband (Hedlund) and young daughter: Her mother was kidnapped as a teenager by her father, the infamous Marsh King (Mendelsohn), and held for years in a remote cabin. Helena was born two years after her mother's abduction, and loved her upbringing in the wilderness — until she learned just how savage her father could be. When Helena's father escapes from prison years later, she must outmaneuver the man who taught her everything she knows about surviving in the wild.

The chilling first trailer opens with the news of the Marsh King's escape. Cop cars surround Helena's home as she says, "Now I realize that the person I believed in the most was really a monster." We also catch glimpses of Helena's childhood at the cabin. Her faded neck tattoos are a relic of that time, with her father saying that the marks "mean we're family." In the present, Gil Birmingham states their real purpose: "It means owned, not family. Don't confuse the two."

Desperate to protect her young daughter from the escaped madman, Helena heads to the cabin where she was unwittingly held captive all those years ago. There's nothing to do but go toe-to-toe with her father in a Rambo-style battle of survival.
