To promote his new album, Recreational Use Only, and to sing a couple of his new songs, Blake Shelton went on The Today Show yesterday. There, he filled in for Carson Daly on his PopStart segment, although got a little present from Daly for his help.
As Carson Daly was too busy filming The Voice, he recorded a message for Blake Shelton. He congratulated the singer on his new album and his performance on the Today Plaza before presenting a treat he thought would make Shelton "very happy."
"There's something that I'd like to share about you that people don't know," Daly said. "Much in the same way that Van Halen famously wanted to have M&Ms backstage, you too have a bit of a demand, and I want you to feel right at home today."
That's when the crew brought out a large bowl of fried calamari. But Shelton would soon go on to regret it.
Shelton Regretted Eating Calamari On 'The Today Show'
"This is like, doughnut calamari," Shelton said, bewildered by the size of the food. The Today Show posted a video featuring the calamari, and they are pretty sizable.
Later in the show, Blake Shelton returned to be introduced again before his performances of "Texas" and "Stay Country or Die Tryin.'" There, he was still holding his bowl of calamari, although something was off.
"We're back with Blake Shelton, and he kept his baby with him," Craig Melvin announced.
That's when Blake Shelton said, "It's starting to stink." Uh oh.
Bush Hager agreed with him.
"I'm not sure how fresh it was when y'all brought it to me," Shelton continued, concern rising over his calamari.
"We're hoping not to give you food poisoning," Hager said.
"We thought if you just fried it, all would be forgiven," added Savannah Guthrie.
"If I cannot get sick for the next 20 minutes, that would be great," Shelton concluded. "Then we don't care."
Thankfully, the questionable calamari didn't mess with his performance, and he did a stellar job. After the performance, though, we don't know.
