According to a report by Fox News, the popular cruise liner Royal Caribbean has halted excursions to Labadee. The location is a private resort on the north coast of Haiti and a popular destination in the company's itinerary. The decision to exclude Labadee isn't because it's unpopular or unsightly. Royal Caribbean reportedly told Fox News, "Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily paused our upcoming visits to Labadee."

Royal Caribbean Blog explains that the government in Haiti is fighting a surge of 'well-coordinated' gang violence. Haiti's transitional government has reportedly declared a state of emergency in response to the conflict. The outlet also explains that the US Embassy in Haiti issued a security alert on April 16 at Port-au-Prince. The alert reportedly cited "widespread protests with potential for violence between police, protestors, and criminal gangs."

Royal Caribbean isn't the only company that has taken this action. The Miami Herald reports that Celebrity Cruises had already removed Labadee from its itinerary weeks prior.

The Destination Is Rated 'Level 4' By The US Department of State Travel Advisory

The US Travel Advisory has rated Haiti 'Level 4,' the highest rating on the scale. According to Travel.State.Gov, the Travel Advisory has four levels. Level 1 is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. Level 4 destinations have a 'Do Not Travel' flag due to 'greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.'

The solemn warning explains that the US Government may have limited ability to assist in these areas. US Citizens are advised to stay clear of the area. If they are already in the location, the government advises that they leave as soon as possible.

Per Fox News, Royal Caribbean describes the suspension of Labadee from its itinerary as "temporary." However, the company has not given a timeline for when it may return. John Lovell, the president of Travel Leaders Network, told the outlet it was wise for Cruise liners to pursue alternative routes.

Lovell also said he hopes ships will stop at Labadee again in the future if the situation settles. "Not only is the beach incredibly beautiful, but it provides employment to Haitians at the resort," he added.
