As one of the biggest states in the country, Texas has way more to it than just its major cities like Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston. These ten charming small towns are some of the best in the state and perfect for a weekend getaway or road trip.

1. Wimberley

This small town is located about an hour outside of Austin in the Texas Hill Country. Main tourist attractions include Jacob's Well, a perennial karstic spring just north of town as well as local wineries and a honky-tonk dance hall.

2. Fredericksburg

A quaint little German town in central Texas, Fredericksburg is known for its wine country as well as activities showcasing its German heritage. Various buildings in its historic district are registered Texas historic landmarks.

3. Marfa

Probably best known as the West Texas town that has the Prada Marfa building, this town is also home to the mysterious Marfa lights. Located between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park, this is the perfect small town for a weekend road trip.

4. Gruene

The tiny town of Gruene (pronounced like "green") is technically within the city limits of New Braunfels, which is less than an hour outside of San Antonio. Best known for Gruene Hall, its 6,000 square foot open-air dance hall is a popular destination for live music. This quaint little town is full of character and a well-known General Store for its visitors.

5. Canyon

Home to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon is also well known for Palo Duro Canyon State Park which is just 12 miles outside of town. Who knew Texas had its version of the Grand Canyon? It's technically part of the Amarillo city limits (another spot on this list).

6. Port Isabel

This West Texas town is one of the oldest in the state and is home to the Port Isabel Lighthouse which has been around since 1852.

7. Jefferson

Dating back to pre-Civil War days, Jefferson is full of historic sites including the 1879 Howe Truss Lighted Bridge and a Ghost Walk (it's considered a ghost town by some).

8. Port Aransas

With 18 miles of shoreline along its white beaches, Port Aransas is the definition of island life in South Texas. With various festivals throughout the year, art galleries to visit, and lots of water activities this town will keep you busy throughout your stay.

One hundred fifty years ago this town started a small flea market which has now expanded to some of the best bargain hunting in the state with First Monday Trade Days. Located around 60 miles east of Dallas, Canton is a historical Texan landmark that will fulfill all your antiquing dreams.

10. Amarillo

Part of the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo is home to the interesting Cadillac Ranch. An outdoor art exhibit made of half-buried Cadillacs nose-first in the ground and decorated with paint. It's an Instagrammers ideal photo op. Let's not forget the U.S. Route 66 - Sixth Street Historic District and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum.
