A Tesla has crashed into a Texas home, killing the woman inside. According to ABC News, the Tesla was allegedly in self-driving mode. The woman was identified by authorities as 69-year-old M. Avila.
The person inside the car was later identified as Michael Butler. The Harris County Sheriff's office explained he was traveling "with an automated driving assistance system" in Katy, Texas.
His specific model of car was a Tesla Model 3. Authorities say that Butler's driving was erratic. They allege he didn't drive in a single lane and left the road before the car struck the house.
Authorities explained, "Butler's Tesla entered through the brick residence at a high rate of speed, and struck M. Avila, who was inside the residence."
According to Click 2 Houston, neighbors who witnessed the tragic incident reported the car was "speeding" through the neighborhood.
They explained, "We saw a car flying by down the street. All we saw was them going about 60 to 70 miles per hour. Next thing we know, we hear it hit that curb in that driveway, and it ran into the house."
Another neighbor even reported seeing the car go "airborne" before crashing into the house.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, who took her to the hospital via airlift, Avila was later tragically pronounced dead. Butler himself was also injured in the incident.
Authorities added that Butler was cooperating with authorities. As of Saturday, June 20, there have been no charges filed.

How Does Tesla Autopilot Work?
According to Tesla's website, their autopilot is "an advanced driver assistance system that enhances safety and convenience behind the wheel."
There are a few ways in which it functions. They describe Auto Lane Change, which "assists to moving to an adjacent lane on the highway," and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, which cruises along whilst acknowledging traffic.
But, Tesla is keen to note that the autopilot systems should be used "properly". They explain that the systems "are intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment."
In any case, our thoughts and prayers are with Avila and her family. Rest in peace.
