Scammers Pretending To Be Country Music Stars Steal Money From Texas Man With Developmental Disability

Scammers of all kinds are rampant. Their preferred territory is the phone and the internet. They are extremely good at duping even the most tech- and scam-savvy among us into handing over personal information as well as money. Their ruses are often sophisticated. Stories abound of unsuspecting people losing thousands of dollars to these online predators. Seldom do they ever get a dime of it back. Only after they get tricked do they realize what actually happened. Trusting, vulnerable people are scammers' typical targets.

One man who admits that he was fooled is Anthony McAlfney. He went public with his story so others will not end up getting hoodwinked like he did. The scammers who preyed on McAlfney pretended to be country music stars Chris Young and Cody Johnson. He shared his unfortunate but not uncommon experience with KCEN-TV.

Scammers Gained McAlfney's Trust

The scammers contacted McAlfney via Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Sadly, impersonating famous singers like Chris Young and Cody Johnson was a heartless ploy that worked. McAlfney says he lost money. He said they also asked him for important information such as his age, social security number, his disability (he has developmental and intellectual disability) and banking details. They knew exactly what they were going for.

Per the KCEN report, McAlfney cautions that if something does not seem authentic when someone contacts you, block it right away. The likelihood that a real celebrity would be calling or contacting you is practically nil. As much as you would love to believe that your favorite country singer is personally reaching out to you, don't fall for it.

Now, McAlfney's family helps him by watching over what he does online. They are pushing for measures that safeguard people with intellectual disabilities from ruthless scammers.

Cody Johnson Himself Warned Fans About People Impersonating Him and His Team

Famous individuals know that their names and identities are being used fraudulently by scammers. They often try to alert fans to this practice so they can be on guard. Ironically, Cody Johnson himself issued a lengthy and detailed warning on his web site. He advised the public to take steps like not divulging sensitive information, only use official, verified accounts, and "double-check" if you hear from someone but you are unsure if they are who they claim to be.

Johnson also gave a list of all his official online accounts. He ended by writing, "Your support and safety mean everything to us. Stay vigilant and spread the word!"
