According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, the latest incident involving his three pit bulls occurred on March 23, 2025. A criminal complaint details that the three dogs entered Garrett's neighbor's yard. Then, the dogs mauled Harriete Phillips, the neighbor, to death. While being brutally killed, Phillips, who was 65 at the time of her death, attempted to defend herself with a hammer.
The Houston Police Department interviewed several neighbors who reportedly said that the dogs, belonging to Garrett, frequently escaped their enclosure. Moreover, they often acted aggressively, even biting one of the neighbors in the past.
As per the New York Post, before Phillips's death, neighbors allegedly texted Garrett. They told him that the dogs were digging on his neighbor's property. He responded that he was going to resolve the issue.
As a result of the investigation, the Harris County District Attorney's Office charged Marshall Garrett with three counts of attack by dog resulting in death on April 9.
One day earlier, however, Garrett had already received serious charges as he was charged wth murder.
Charged With Murder
Back on October 29, 2024, according to a different criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE, Garrett was called to help one of his friends, a woman who alleged that she had been robbed by a man.
Video footage shows Garrett arriving at the scene and allegedly hitting the 69-year-old man on the back of his head after telling him to "give it back." The man, named Alton Martin by the New York Post, fell to the ground. He was rushed to a local hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.
An autopsy performed on Martin determined his cause of death as homicide. The woman Garrett allegedly "helped," identified as Latrecia Washington, has yet to be arrested. She was charged with murder, too.
Marshall Garrett has not entered a plea in either case. He has been previously convicted of other offenses such as trespass, evading arrest, and burglary.
