"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Will Davis," the press release reads. "Will was a beloved member of our Bearkat football family here at Sam Houston who touched the lives of everyone he knew. Will was an upbeat, positive, passionate young man who will be sincerely missed. Tanya, the kids and I are praying for Will's family during this difficult time."

Davis, a graduate of South Boston, Virginia, had spent three seasons playing for Virginia Union University. Upon confirmation of his death, Bobby Williams, the Athletic Director for Sam Houston State, also issued a statement via press release.

"We lost a member of our Bearkat family this weekend and everyone is in pain today," the statement reads. "My heart hurts right now for the family, friends, coaches and teammates of William Davis. We are never prepared when we lose someone suddenly in our lives and it's especially tough when it is someone so young and still has a full life in front of them. I want to express my sincerest condolences to Will's family and everyone whose lives he touched."

William Davis Was a Rising Talent

Davis was a standout talent during his time with Virginia Union University, a Division II HBCU. He earned all-conference honors in 2024, following an exceptional season that saw him make 56 tackles, two interceptions and a sack.

"He then transferred to West Virginia for the 2025 season but played in just one game—the Mountaineers' season-opening win over Robert Morris," Chron reported. Davis transferred to Sam Houston State in January, and he then joined the Bearkats for spring practices in Huntsville in April."

Unfortunately, there's no telling whether Davis would have continued his career at a professional level. However, he was certainly proving capable of becoming an elite-level linebacker.

Currently, no cause of death has been provided. Furthermore, there are no details regarding Davis' upcoming funeral. That information will likely remain private for family and close friends.
