Last Thursday, Texan Candace Payne posted a Facebook Live video of herself unboxing a Chewbacca mask in a Kohl's parking lot. That may not seem like a compelling video, but within three days it was viewed over 135 million times, making it the most popular Facebook Live video ever created. Now Dubbed "Chewbacca Mom," Payne has become a massive Internet star overnight.
If you haven't seen the video yet, Payne's hysterical laughter and sheer joy are what make the clip a hit. At the beginning, she giddily jokes about how the mask is really for her and not for her kids.
Payne's video was so popular that Kohl's sold out of the Chewbacca masks in a couple days, and other stores quickly ran out of stock, too. Payne inadvertently became the best marketing the creators of the mask and Kohl's could have ever hoped to have.
To show their gratitude for Payne's viral video, Kohl's showed up on her doorstep in Grand Prairie, Texas with Chewbacca masks for the whole family, toys for the kids and a bunch of other special gifts.
