Teacher Dies And Five Students Injured After Parent Crashes Into Daycare

A horrific tragedy took place at a daycare in San Antonio, Texas, on Thursday, December 19. A parent accelerated her car, hit another vehicle, and hit a fence. As a result, Alexia Rosales, 22, was crushed by the car while she cradled a student in her arms, heroically protecting the baby. Five other students and another teacher were injured as a result and Rosales, unfortunately, passed as a result of her injuries.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff, Javier Salazar, the parent, who was picking up her kids, may have suffered from a "medical condition" that made her accelerate the car. Rosales and the other teacher, Alicia, 23, had taken the children outside following a holiday performance, according to the Daily Mail.

The parent then accelerated the car and crashed into another vehicle. Both of them hit the fence and crushed Rosales. Salazar does not believe it has anything to do with "intoxication or any sort of criminality." Moreover, he does not expect criminal charges to be filed against the parent.

Rosales had one baby in her hands and cradled the baby when the vehicle crushed them both.

"[She was] protecting the baby," Berenice, Rosales' mother, told the Daily Mail. "You can tell she was a teacher from the heart." Berenice stated that the students loved her and "wanted to be around her."

Alicia, the other teacher, helped the other children by handing them to others. Alexia Rosales, unfortunately, was trapped below the car. The fire department had to use a hydraulic lift to retrieve her and the baby. The injured students were transported to the hospital, and Alicia ended up receiving 12 stitches on her forehead.

Alexia Rosales, on the other hand, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the New York Post.

Family Dismissed

Following Rosales' tragic death, her family told the Daily Mail that authorities were not allowing them to see Alexia. According to Berenice and Carlos, Alexia's father, they traveled to the hospital to identify her daughter's body. However, the hospital dismissed them.

"They didn't let me see her," Berenice said. "I don't even know if it's her. How do I know if it's her? Why don't they let us identify her as her parents?"

In response, the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office told the outlet that they needed to complete an autopsy on Rosales' body before her family was able to see her. "Once the medical examiner's office concludes the investigation, the body can be released for funeral arrangements," Issac Neri, Assistant Public Information Officer for the County Manager, told the Daily Mail.

Alexia Rosales is described as an angel by her family and a passionate teacher who loved her students. ExcellED Montessori, the daycare she worked for, set up a GoFundMe campaign on her family's behalf. "Her smile lit up every room, and her laughter brought so much joy to our days," the description reads. "She had a special way of connecting with everyone—making you feel seen, heard, and valued."
