Six people were injured by the taxi as it mounted the curb just outside the packed Macy's on 4th Street and Sixth Avenue, New York. As the driver appeared to lose control of his vehicle, he swerved towards pedestrians. Six people were hit, but a mother and child took the worst of it.
As one bystander recalled, "One gentleman went over [to] shut the car off, got into it, and shut it off. There was a whole group of us that ripped the fender off, and lifted the car back." They pulled back the taxi and got one child to safety. However, the child was not the only victim.
"That's when I grabbed the little boy, got him to the corner [and] realized what ended up being his mom underneath." They quickly worked to pull the mother from the now immobile taxi outside the Macy's.
As the man mounted the curb, he managed to strike four other people alongside the mother and child. Four of them refused medical help, but the mother and child were taken to hospital. Here, they are undergoing treatment, but in stable condition.
Macy's Taxi Incident Not Suspicious
Although the driver of the taxi that hit multiple people outside Macy's is being investigated, it is not suspected to be an intentional attack. Police reports claim that the driver of the vehicle was having a medical episode. This caused him to lose control of his car, hitting the pedestrians.
Thankfully, the taxi attack outside Macy's isn't being treated as malicious. Despite emergency services being on edge after the attack on the Christmas market in Germany, these things can happen everywhere. However, this doesn't appear to be related, and instead, just very bad timing.
The medical emergency hasn't been revealed yet, but it could be something like a heart attack or fit. It is a stroke of luck that the taxi wasn't able to do any fatal damage to the shoppers. It was not being driven with intent, clearly, and came to a stop before anyone was grievously wounded.
