Target Pulls 'Offensive' Halloween Costume From Shelves
The company recently came under fire after a children's Halloween costume drew a striking resemblence to a minstrel show character. The costume which was sold as "Kids Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown," was modeled by a black child. In the ad, the child is wearing a mask that features a large mouth with big red lips and a tiny black top hat. All features that can be attributed to a minstrel show clown. In addition the pose that the child is holding also resembles historic blackface imagery.
Of course, the costume led to an outpouring of reactions from people on social media.
"They knew exactly what they was doing. doubt they even had that though cross they minds when they had the kid pose for the photos smh. fake ass billion dollar company," one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"If they didn't apologize, I wouldn't have even thought twice about this.. these did told on themselves???. Fire the PR," a second user chimed in.
Amid the backlash, Target made the decision to remove the costume from their shelves. The retail giant also released a statement apologizing for the "offensive" costume.
