Target Issues Recall of Baby Wipes Over Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Contamination

The possible bacteria contamination in the Target baby wipes is concerning due to infants' undeveloped immune systems. It is also antibiotic-resistant.

Target has issued a recall of popular baby wipes. According to the New York Post, this comes after a possible contamination of an antibiotic-resistant bacterium.

Target issued a voluntary recall of the baby wipes on June 4 after the chain and the manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, were made aware of the contamination.

The affected baby wipes are from the brand Up & Up. They may have been infected with antibiotic-resistant Burkholderia cepacia and Burkholderia gladioli.

The bacteria are known to cause infections in healthcare settings. The CDC has noted that it is known to be resistant to antibiotics, meaning it is "difficult to treat".

They added that newborns and infants are much more vulnerable to infection. This is because their immune systems are not properly developed. They explained that whilst healthy people are not typically threatened by the bacteria, immunocompromised people are at a high risk.

They explained that in vulnerable groups, the infection is "more likely to spread into the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis" and also pneumonia.
