Authorities have found a suitcase stuffed full of human remains at a grizzly scene in the New York City river.

According to a report by AMNY, Police made the grim discovery on Wednesday evening at around 5:30 PM in the East River. Police say that a ferry crew spotted the suitcase bobbing in the water. The ferry reportedly cruised next to the case, but the crew couldn't drag it on board as it was too heavy.
The ferry crew contacted the NYPD Harbor Unit, which obtained the suitcase and took it to Pier 16 in the Financial District. Police found human remains inside when they opened the case on land. Per a report by the Daily Mail, authorities took the suitcase for an examination, although it's not clear if the body is male or female. Police were at least able to confirm that the body was an adult.
The NYPD's Harbor Unit provided the Daily Mail with the following statement:
'On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at approximately 1730 hours, NYPD's Harbor Unit retrieved a suitcase containing human remains in the East River in the vicinity of Governor's Island, within the confines of the 1st Precinct.'
The Body In The Suitcase Was Wrapped In A Sleeping Bag
The report by AMNY suggests authorities found the body wrapped in a sleeping bag. The outlet also explains that the body part was transferred to the Medical Examiner's office to identify the remains and determine the probable cause of death.
At the time of writing, it's unclear how long the suitcase had been floating in the river. Authorities have not disclosed a rough age, how the person died, or if they were dead before they ended up inside.
