Sturgill Simpson Shows Soul Power on ‘The Tonight Show’

Fresh off the European leg of his world tour, Sturgill Simpson gave a sweeping performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Simpson and company performed “All Around You,” a soul-inspired track on his new album, Sailor’s Guide to Earth. The album, particularly this song, showcases a new side of Simpson. He has adapted his powerful country voice to soul music — not an easy feat for most singers. He sings soul with conviction, and it resonates.

Since his last tour, Simpson has added a horn section, taking his band’s sound to greater heights. Watch for saxophonist Brad Walker’s killer solo in this performance.

Simpson has been on tour since April. When we caught his opening show in Austin, he was still getting comfortable with the new style and band formation.

“They tell me I fucked up: There aren’t no horns in country music,” Simpson told the crowd. “I say tell Merle Haggard. That’s where I stole it.”

The band is clearly in full swing and banging on all cylinders now. They just wrapped up a string of dates across Europe and have returned stateside. The Sailor’s Tour will continue through the fall. For a complete list of dates, click here.
