The good news just keeps rolling in for Sturgill Simpson. A week after shocking everyone with an Album of the Year Grammy nomination, Simpson learned is headed to 30 Rock.
The Sailor's Guide to Earth singer will be the first musical guest of 2017 for Saturday Night Live. Simpson took video of the announcement on Instagram with the caption "Heading to SNL."
Alongside host and Rogue One star Felicity Jones, Simpson is the latest in a growing list of country artists to play SNL. Chris Stapleton, Margo Price, and Maren Morris all performed in 2016, and past performers include Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton.
Country music hasn't always been the first choice for SNL musical guests, but after the Grammy nominations, Simpson's presence feels mandatory. Simpson surprised music fans everywhere when A Sailor's Guide to Earth was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammys. Simpson's SNL performance will allow unfamiliar audiences to see just how great his music truly is.
The record was also nominated for Best Country Album, a category he was left out of at the CMAs. Simpson will go up against the likes of Beyonce, Justin Beiber, Adele, and Drake for Album of the Year. Many feel that Sturgill stands a shot of winning as the "protest" vote for Album of the Year. Whether or not that's the case, the SNL appearance will surely help.
Simpson's SNL performance will air January 14, with the Grammys coming shortly after on Feburary 12. Win or lose, its good to see Sturgill and country music getting the mainstream recognition they deserve.
