Sturgill Simpson fans got a special surprise when fellow Americana chart topper Jason Isbell joined him onstage for a special duet. Isbell supplied some soulful electric guitar and vocals during their joint cover of Terry Allen's classic country track, "Amarillo Highway".
The surprise collaboration happened during Simpson's tour stop at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Oct. 15. In the video above, you'll see the two switch off supplying lead vocals between electrifying guitar solos. It's rare to see two individuals as talented as Isbell and Simpson join together for a performance as good as this one. Their rendition brought a new energy to the 1979 track, which is no easy feat for any artist.
It would be a dream to see Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell head out on the road together, or even combine their artist talents for a collaborative project. If they chose to follow in the footsteps of Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, country and Americana would likely never be the same. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Simpson will continue his Living the Dream Tour through the end of November, with stops planned in Nashville, Denver and Los Angeles. Isbell is also set to play four sold-out shows at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium next week, with more dates planned through March 2016.
