Grammy-winning singer-songwriter turned zombie movie actor Sturgill Simpson can now add San Diego Comic-Con panelist to his resume. Simpson, Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki and Batman Ninja director Junpei Mizusaki will appear together on July 20 for "Sound & Fury: Creators of Animatrix and Batman Ninja Unite for Sturgill Simpson."
Sound & Fury, described in a press release as a project merging "American rock music and Japanese anime in a way never seen before," involves all three panelists. Details are slim by design: the panel doubles as the premiere screening of the project's first trailer, making it a must-see session for devotees of either animation or Americana.
For fans of Simpson, this vague news about an animated rock opera might further tease new music the singer describes as "definitely not country."

It's Simpson's latest project in what's becoming a multi-media career in the mold of fellow renaissance man Kris Kristofferson. He stars in the CBS All Access original series One Dollar. On the big screen, he appears in and sings the theme song for the cheeky Jim Jarmusch zombie film The Dead Won't Die. The soundtrack cut was Simpson's first commercially-released new song since the 2016 release of Sailor's Guide to Earth. A second 2019 theatrical release, the romantic drama Queen & Slim, features Simpson as a rogue police officer.
Per its mission statement, the San Diego Comic Convention (Comic-Con International) is a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation organized for charitable purposes and dedicated to creating the general public's awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular art forms, including participation in and support of public presentations, conventions, exhibits, museums and other public outreach activities which celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.
