Stevie Nicks Shared the Inspiration Behind This Classic Fleetwood Mac Song
As PEOPLE reports, Nicks told the audience at the City of Hope 2026 Music, Film and Entertainment Industry (MFEI) Spirit of Life Gala on Oct. 27 about the inspiration for the Fleetwood Mac classic "Landslide."
When Nicks introduced the song, she talked about the decision that influenced it.
"I wrote this song in Aspen, Colorado, when I was deciding whether or not Lindsey [Buckingham] and I should continue," the singer said. "Well, it was a long time ago and 930,000 years later, we still continued."
Nicks added that she "was looking out over the snow-covered hills in this beautiful house" in the mountains. Since the people she was staying with had gone to dinner, she began to write.
"I'm like, okay, because I'm so poor that just sitting in this house when you're looking out at this view is so fantastic, I'm going to write a fantastic song," Nicks said. "I just happened to bring my Goya [guitar], which I could hardly play, but I thought it looked good, so I wrote this song."
There Is One Song Nicks Won't Play
Back in 2024, Nicks talked about the Fleetwood Mac song she won't play.
The events of Sep. 11, 2001, inspired Nicks to write "Illume (9-11)," which is part of the group's final album, Say You Will.
Nicks said she was staying in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York that day. She took a quick nap. Only a short time later, she was woken by her assistant to look out torn apart by the wreckage of the Twin Towers.
"I've never been a political person, but suddenly, I felt like I was in the middle of history," she explained. "We were at the Waldorf with all these foreign diplomats. It was very scary. I watched people jumping from the Twin Towers on a Mexican TV channel. We put wet towels in the windows to keep out the burning iron smell."
While those events inspired her to write the emotional track, she said she refuses to sing the song onstage.
