Stephen Colbert recently joined John Prine for an excellent performance of "That's The Way The World Goes 'Round." Prine appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote his upcoming duets album.
Prine and Holly Williams sang a phenomenal version of "I'm Telling You" on air. But afterwards, Prine stuck around for a few more. Colbert joined him for an "internet exclusive" performance that already has nearly 60,000 views. He tells Prine, "We'll probably do this for the Internet, unless something terrible happens and we have to cheer up the world on the TV show."
A totally tickled Colbert joins Prine in the first chorus and then takes over the second verse. And he nails it.
Fans of Colbert shouldn't be surprised to see him singing. He occasionally joins musical guests and even fronted a Rolling Stones cover band growing up. He's also got an affinity for songwriters and folk legends such as Prine.
Prine hails from Chicago, where Colbert went to Northwestern University in the 1980s. Prine released his classic album Bruised Orange, which includes "That's The Way The World Goes 'Round," in 1978. He says wrote it after being fed up with cynicism (including his own).
Given all the negativity with the upcoming election, it's a perfect time for this tune.
