"Star Trek" Captain Will Perform Metal Set at Upcoming Festival

That’s right, "Star Trek"'s original Captain Kirk will be performing a set of rock covers at an upcoming festival this fall.

Actors have been known to dabble in music, particularly heavy metal. For example, Jason Momoa and Jack Black covering Black Sabbath were among the highlights of Ozzy Osbourne's farewell concert. Now we can add William Shatner to the list of performers showing off his love of heavy metal.

That's right, the original Captain James T. Kirk from the sci-fi drama Star Trek will be performing a set of rock covers at an upcoming festival this fall. We have the details below.

Where Is William Shatner Performing?

The 95-year-old Shatner will perform his metal set during Riot Fest this fall, as reported by Far Out Magazine. The popular festival is scheduled to take place September 18-20 at Douglass Park in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to Shatner, the bands performing at the event are Tool, Morrissey (maybe, he's known to cancel), and Iggy Pop.

"I've always believed that music, like space, is about exploration," the actor said in a statement. "Riot Fest is exactly the kind of place where anything can happen. We're bringing volume, intensity, and a few surprises."

He added, "With this incredible band behind me, I expect nothing less than lift-off. I can't wait to share this experience with the fans."

The news comes as Shatner is preparing to release a heavy metal album early next year. And while it does not yet have a title or release date, the icon shared some details about what fans can expect.

"Thirty-five metal virtuosos," he said. "Thunderous guitars. Chaos with purpose.?Covers of legends like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest — and a few originals forged in the same cosmic fire."

He also shared, "This project is, quite literally, a gathering of forces. Loud imagination. Honest intensity. Unapologetic exploration."

The "Star Trek" Captain Is No Stranger to Music

Long time Star Trek fans are likely familiar with Shatner's music projects. His first album, The Transformed Man, features mashups of pop songs with readings from classic literature. The project also features his infamous cover of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

Then Shatner performed Elton John's classic "Rocket Man" at the Science Fiction Film Awards in 1978. It has been parodied numerous times in the five decades since it was first performed. No word yet on whether his performance at Riot Fest will be spoken word, but it promises to be fun.
