Soup Kits Sold at Walmart Recalled Over Possible Listeria Contamination

It's becoming harder to enjoy a soup and salad this summer. The FDA has issued a recall for a soup kit sold exclusively at Walmart.

After a Cyclospora outbreak earlier this summer, enjoying a soup and salad for lunch became a risky proposition. But as the news about the lettuce recall dies down, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now issued a notice about a variety of soup kits sold at Walmart.

A Recall Has Been Issued for 3,240 Soup Kits

Last Wednesday, Maryland-based Kettle Cusine issued a recall for 3,240 tomato soup kits. The products were sold exclusively at Walmart.

As reported by CBS News, the affected products were sold by the big box retailer in 29 states between June 30 and July 7.

The food company recalled the soup after it tested positive for Listeria. According to Mayo Clinic, healthy people rarely get sick from this bacterium. However, it can be very dangerous for unborn babies, newborns, and people with weak immune systems. Symptoms may include severe headache and stiffness. They can also include nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

The FDA also noted that there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the product.

How Do I Know If I Have the Affected Product?

The FDA states that those who have purchased the soup kits should wash their hands after handling it. Any surfaces that it has come into contact with should also be cleaned.

"Do not rely on smell or appearance to determine whether the product is safe," the notice read.

If consumers have the product, they should dispose of it immediately or return it to Walmart for a refund.
