Nashville-based country band Sophie & the Broken Things chronicle a rough night on their debut single "Paper I.D.," from their forthcoming self-titled EP (out on January 31).
Singer-songwriter Sophie Gault takes her band name from a chance encounter with Music City heroes. Driving home from a songwriting session, Gault stopped in to legendary Music Row bar, Bobby's Idle Hour, where she met Americana icon and personal songwriting hero Julie Miller. Gault paid tribute to the encounter by naming her band after Miller's song "Broken Things."
Gault, who grew up on a 10-acre farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, reflects on her move to Nashville on new single "Paper I.D," a jangly, country-fried tune about feeling isolated in the heart of the city.
"I wrote this song after getting stuck outside of a bar, shortly after moving to Nashville," Gault tells Wide Open Country. "I had a temporary paper license while I was waiting for the real one in the mail. The person I was trying to meet up with was inside the bar, but my phone was dead so I couldn't reach them or anyone—not even a Lyft ride home. I remember feeling pretty isolated but also saw the humor of the situation, especially with the added effect of the rain pouring down."
