The upcoming show will follow Kratos, the main protagonist of the gaming franchise, and his relationship with his sonAtreus. That same storyline has been a key throughline in recent issues of the game. The carryover should appease diehard fans.
Hurst is also a strong selection for Kratos. Not only does he fit the physical appearance, but he's also familiar with the franchise. The former "Sons of Anarchy" actor voiced Thor in the 2022 release of "God of War: Ragnarok." That installment of the franchise won six total awards, including best narrative, best audio design, and the public-voted EE Game of the Year.
"Kratos, the titular character of the entire franchise, is Spartan by birth and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in the service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle," Deadline wrote when explaining Kratos' character.
Ryan Hust Will Get at Least Two Seasons as Kratos
For anyone who is worried that "God of War" could be a one-season wonder, have no fear. According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios issued a two-season order when giving the go-ahead for production.
"Based on PlayStation's ancient mythology-themed video game, the series received a two-season order, with pre-production underway in Vancouver, and casting has begun," Deadline reported.
Two seasons should be enough to build up fan interest and potentially position the show to be a long-term success. The episodes will air on Amazon Prime. The streaming platform will ensure the show reaches a global audience on a platform known for high-quality television.
Hurst is no stranger to long-running shows. He played the role of Opie Winston for 56 episodes of "Sons of Anarchy," along with Li'l Foster Farrell for 26 episodes of "Outsiders," among other programs.
With no release date set, and the first season now reportedly in pre-production, gaming fans will be eagerly awaiting the release of the first episode, and the seasons to come.
