On April 24, 2026, Jake Reiner, 34, their older son, write a moving essay on his Substack describing what his parents meant to him. Additionally, he conveys the unimaginable pain of their loss. Reiner's tribute is searing, personal, tender-hearted, and acutely honest. As he wrote, "To me, my parents are at the center of my life." And now, that center is tragically, brutally, irreplaceably gone.
The Magnitude of Jake Reiner's Grief Defies Measurement
Reiner shares the ghastly moment when he learned of their murders. "I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell just happened," Reiner wrote.
He added, "Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time. It's too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it's not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare."
Reiner's blazing sense of injustice is palpable. "They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them. They deserved to be loved..."
The Reiners Were a Close, Loving Family
