Reports claim that the incident began when a brown MG One SUV lost control while navigating a curve and overturned on the Tepic-Matanchen Highway.
Medina and Rubio were traveling nearby in a Volkswagen Vento at the time.
While attempting to avoid the overturned SUV, they reportedly lost control of their own vehicle and crashed, causing the car to roll "several times".
The impact proved devastating, with authorities pronouncing both Medina and Rubio dead at the scene.
Officials have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash and determine responsibility for the incident.
Police have not publicly identified the occupants of the SUV.
Medina shared an Instagram Story just hours before his death showing himself singing and playing the accordion.
