Shortly after 1 PM on Saturday, an on-site officer heard what he believed was gunshots within Haywood Mall near the Macy's. When he went to investigate, he encountered a woman who had been shot in the foot and a male victim who had been shot in the neck and shoulder.
The Greenville Police Department announced Kamari Stephone Walker is being charged with high and aggravated assault and battery. Such crimes allow him to be charged as an adult.
Police said both victims were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition.
Mall Shooting Suspect Will Be Tried as an Adult
For his actions, Walker faces multiple charges. However, since he is a minor, the only publicly revealed charge is assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
The charges stem from Walker firing his gun in the mall at another group of individuals who were also firing a gun. The shootout reportedly began after a verbal altercation between the two groups.
Oddly, the incident occurred a year after Haywood Mall released a statement saying it would be beefing up security measures.
"The safety and security of our shoppers, retailers, and employees is our highest priority," according to the June 2025 statement from the mall to the Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Following the scary incident, officers say they worked with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office to clear the mall. Officers also helped coordinate a designated pick-up zone for drivers to retrieve their loved ones.
Greenville City Fire Department and other law enforcement officers also assisted with evacuations.
No other shots were fired after officers arrived on the scene.
Greenville Police Department says officers are still attempting to identify the other party involved in the incident. Anyone with videos or information is advised to contact GPD.
Haywood Mall reopened the following day and has resumed normal store hours.
