Rob Lowe Says Wife of 30 Years Sheryl Berkoff Is His "Best Friend"

As a former member of the "Bratpack" with Emilio Estevez and Molly Ringwald, actor Rob Lowe has been a heartthrob since the 80s. Known for being the toast of Hollywood at a young age from films like St. Elmo's Fire and The Outsiders, he definitely had a reputation for being a party boy. But all of that would change when he met his current wife, Sheryl Lynn Berkoff.

The couple first met back in 1983 on a blind date. They went out a few times but just weren't ready to commit to a relationship at the time. Fast forward a few years and future wife Sheryl Berkoff was a makeup artist on the set of Lowe's film Bad Influence. The timing was right this time so they decided to give it a real shot. It wasn't easy though...the actor had been dealing with alcoholism and even a sex tape scandal. Not to mention the fact that he'd never been monogamous before.

"I had met my now wife, Sheryl, and was attempting my first try at monogamy—which was not really in my nature at the time—and I wasn't able to do it," he explained to Haute Living. "It made me examine how I was living my life. That led me to getting sober, which led me to changing my life—giving me everything I now have."

He added, "You have to want to change. I wanted it; I was ready."

The couple tied the knot in 1991 and have been happily together ever since. They even welcomed two children together — sons Matthew Edward Lowe and John Owen Lowe. The boys grew up to be a lawyer and actor/writer respectively and Sheryl keeps busy with her own jewelry line, Sheryl Lowe Jewelry. The family regularly attends therapy as a way to keep strong communication going, something Lowe says is key for them.

"The one thing, though, that has been a part of our family is the notion of therapy as a sort of proactive, non-shaming [practice], like a trainer," Lowe revealed to AOL. "We think of going to therapy or talking to a therapist ... it's literally no different from a chiropractor."

After Lowe settled down into family life he kept acting, appearing in numerous TV shows like The West WingParks and RecreationBrothers & Sisters, The Grinder, and Code Black. He's also currently starring on 9-1-1: Lone Star (which sadly films in Los Angeles, California instead of Texas).

On Gwyneth Paltrow's Goopfellas podcast, Lowe revealed that the key to his long and successful marriage is really based on the fact that he married his best friend.

"It really is all about who you pick. I always say to people, 'If there's any way to marry your best friend, do it.' 'Cause the rest of it comes and goes, and I was very lucky there."
