Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Glynn Wilburn faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter. As well as felony reckless driving causing serious injury and a great bodily injury enhancement.
The charges stem from a collision on September 6, 2025, that claimed the life of 21-year-old Gavin Hinkley.
His fiancée, Madeline Fox, 20, survived the crash but suffered severe injuries.
Sheriff's Deputy Arrested Following Fatal Crash
According to investigators, Wilburn was responding to reports of shots fired when the collision occurred.
Authorities say he was traveling along Cherry Valley Boulevard at approximately 100 mph. He then struck Hinkley and Fox's vehicle at an intersection at about 71 mph.
"The driver of the civilian vehicle was killed, and his fiancée, who was a passenger, suffered severe injuries," a news release reads.
"Moments before the collision, dispatch had confirmed there were no reported injuries, the suspect vehicle had left the scene, and deputies had already arrived at the location of the reported shooting."
An arraignment date has not yet been scheduled.
Families Continue Search for Justice
According to reports, Hinkley and Fox were running errands when the crash occurred, including making preparations for their upcoming wedding.
Law firm Panish Shea Ravipudi said Hinkley died at the scene, while Fox suffered "a traumatic brain injury" along with "other life-altering injuries."
"What happened to Gavin and Madeline was preventable. Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Glynn Wilburn was entrusted with significant authority and responsibility, and he understood the obligations that come with operating an emergency vehicle," a statement from the Fox family reads.
"No badge, title, or position should place anyone above accountability, especially when reckless actions result in such devastating consequences."
The Hinkley family also welcomed the filing of charges, calling it an important step toward justice.
"While no criminal charge can bring Gavin back or undo the devastating impact this tragedy has had on Madeline and both our families, today is a meaningful step toward justice," the statement added.
"Gavin's life mattered. Madeline's life matters. We will continue to honor Gavin's memory, stand beside Madeline, and fight for the justice they both deserve."
A GoFundMe campaign established for Fox in October has raised more than $47,000, surpassing its original $25,000 goal.
