Shannon McNally honors one of her greatest musical heroes, Waylon Jennings, on forthcoming album The Waylon Sessions (out May 28 via Compass Records in partnership with Blue Rose. The album, which includes reimagined versions of Jennings' classics, from "I Ain't Living Long Like This" to "You Asked Me To," features Jessi Colter, Buddy Miller, Rodney Crowell, and Lukas Nelson.
Today, Wide Open Country is exclusively premiering McNally's cover of "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line," which was released as the second single from Jennings' 1968 albm Only the Greatest.
"Waylon cut this tune in the 1960s, it's the most classic Nashville pre-long haired Waylon on the album and a particularly fun one," McNally tells Wide Open Country. "The singer sort of has to be either drunk or really pissed off to get all of the necessary words out. I particularly liked singing this one through the lady lens as the song takes on an entirely different personality and the 'Little Sister' factor is on full display."
McNally says she hopes to help introduce Jennings' timeless songs to a new audience.
"I have never heard a woman sing any of them, but these tunes are poignant and relevant to me and to women in general right now," McNally said in a press release. "As a songwriter, bringing a song to its full potential so that a larger or different audience can connect is all I've ever cared about."
