Officials Respond as Investigation Continues
In a statement following the incident, Wilson described the moment as a sobering reminder of ongoing gun violence.
"We cannot let this become normal," she said. "We must invest in opportunity, and we must continue working to keep people safe."
"Today's announcement was about making those necessary investments. And in the weeks ahead, I'll share more about our comprehensive strategy to address gun violence and public safety."
The Daily Mail reported that the community center sustained damage during the incident, with bullets striking a glass door.
Police Chief Shon Barnes also addressed the situation, emphasizing the broader impact on the community.
"This shooting reminds us that violence has no place in our community. Our neighbors have the right to gather, speak, and celebrate without fear of violence," he said in a statement.
As of Wednesday morning local time, officials had not released further updates. The investigation remains ongoing.
