Cates, who appeared in high-profile films like Clay Pigeons and the UK sitcom 2point4 Children, passed away on May 4. However, The Hollywood Reporter reported the sad news on Oct. 18.
Ulrich, who played Billy Loomis in three installments of the Scream film series, was married to Cates from 1997 to 2005. The former couple shared two children, twins Jakob and Naiia.
Naiia paid a heartfelt tribute to her late mother in an Instagram post in June.
"My beautiful, free-spirited mom lived a hard life and still found ways to make herself and others laugh and smile <3 Now she can rest easy," she wrote. "I will always see you in black and white photos, Virginia slims, baggy clothes, no bras, big sunglasses, doodling while talking, pleasers, and flip flops in everything in between."
"I love you, thank you for your creativity, curiosity, and your bravery to always be true to yourself - no matter what," she added.
'Scream' Star Skeet Ulrich Shows Support For His Daughter in Wake of His Ex's Death
In a show of support for his daughter and his late ex-wife, Ulrich took to the comments section.
"I love you more than words can say, sweetheart," Ulrich wrote on June 11.
Cates cut her acting teeth on the sitcom 2point4 Children in the 1990s. However, she famously reinvented herself (changing her hair color and using a different name in the audition process) to land a part in the 1995 prestige film An Awfully Big Adventure, which also starred heavy hitters like Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman.
From there, Cates scored film parts alongside actors like Burt Reynolds (Big City Blues in 1997) and Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn (in 1998's Clay Pigeons). She meet Skeet Ulrich on A Soldier's Sweetheart, a TV movie that also starred Kiefer Sutherland.
Some of her later acting roles included 2013's Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and 2016's Everlasting.
Cates leaves behind her children, Jakob and Naiia Ulrich.
