The
Louisville Fire Department and Louisville Metro Police responded to a call made on May 4, according to ABC affiliate KTRK-TV. A truck driver had rammed into the side of a Kentucky bridge, authorities say, per PEOPLE.On Sunday, at around 10 am local time, an unidentified driver lost control of his semi-truck on the I-65 Kennedy Bridge.
Somehow, the driver survived the colossal crash, and no one else was hurt. Although the fear for his own life swiftly kicked in as the driver's seat hung over the bridge.
Dramatic images shared by LMPD on X show the crash and the harrowing position the driver was left in. I can't imagine the fear the driver would have felt being in such a compromised position. I wouldn't suggest looking at the images if you're prone to being queasy.
Immediately reaching for his phone, the driver called 911. In the mighty 18-minute phone call, he pleaded for his life. "I'm just hanging over the bridge. I don't want to die," he said. He also said that he was scared to move at all, concerned that any sudden movement could dislodge the truck.
The Louisville Fire Department
shared a video of the daring rescue. Be careful, it's a nail-biter.Man Pulled From Dangling Truck Using A High-Point Rope
Past the Sky Lease Cargo, a firefighter strapped to a high-point rope rescued the man still terrified in the driving seat. In the video, you can see the driver get pulled up to safety.
He was taken over the stranded truck and slowly descended onto the road, where a stretch of tarpaulin lay for him.
Although the driver was unharmed, he was still taken to Louisville Metro Emergency Medical Services just in case. Being on the edge of certain death for so long would have more mental ramifications than physical ones, however.
Police say he lost control of the vehicle, although that's just a working theory. An investigation is still underway.
