Luckily for him, he caught the cancer early when it was at stage three. However, despite his many treatments and even surgery, he still has it. Talking to The Australian, he opened up about his ongoing fight with the disease.
"I've had pretty much every treatment known to man — every scan, ultrasound, MRI. I've kind of had 'the works." However, despite the best efforts of doctors, he is still plagued by the illness. But he hasn't let that slow him down. He hasn't given up the fight.
Initially, when the cancer was first found, rock star Rob Hirst underwent chemotherapy. This went on for months before doctors attempted to remove the tumour during an eight-hour surgery. However, they were unsuccessful. Since then, he had been on both radio and chemotherapy.
Rob Hirst Continues His Fight With Cancer
Talking further about his ongoing struggle with cancer, Rob Hirst highlighted how important it is to get regularly checked. "Also, I think that lesson for me — and maybe why I've lasted this long — is because, if you do have any of that kind of symptom, where there's something that you feel is wrong, just go and get a simple blood test. It could be life-changing, and life-extending."
Pancreatic cancer can sneak up on you. If you ever feel something may be amiss, it is better to be safe than sorry. Simple blood tests can quickly identify if there is something wrong. For Rob Hirst, catching his cancer early on has helped him live with it for two years. If he had taken a test later, the results would have been a lot worse.
Hirst is 69 now and still fighting his disease. He is trying to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer by sharing his own ordeal. "It hasn't really attracted the attention, for example, of skin cancers or breast cancers or others - but it's really on the rise."
He encourages everyone to stay vigilant and get regular check-ups.
