Can the Son of Rob Reiner Get His Inheritance?

As reported by the New York Post, a court petition shows that 32-year-old Nick is requesting $750,000 of his trust. Rob and Michele stipulated that he would receive half the funds upon turning 30. He would receive the other half when he turned 35.

However, documents state that the trustee, lawyer Paul Kanin, refuses to transfer the trust to Nick. Kanin has alleged "unsubstantiated 'concerns' about Nick's so-called competence to 'manage a trust."

Nick is now using a public defender to represent him in court. He had hired defense attorney Alan Jackson. However, the high-profile lawyer withdrew from the case in January after Kanin refused to give Nick his inheritance.

Nick says he has no other way to pay his legal bills. The petition says he is using the money to pay Jackson and that any delay will jeopardize his defense.

"Every additional week of delay is a week in which the counsel of his choice cannot investigate or prepare on his behalf — prejudice to his defense that cannot be undone," his lawyers state. "The harm is irreparable, and it grows with each day the Trustee withholds funds that are already Nick's."

They add, "In the meantime, for reasons unknown to Petitioner, the Trustee continues to deplete Nick's funds by paying lawyers to raise one reason after another for holding on to Nick's money for another two years, all of which violate the plain terms of the Trust."

Nick was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders on Dec. 15, 2025, after his parents were stabbed in their Brentwood home the previous day.

If convicted, Nick could face a life sentence without parole. He could even face the death penalty.

Nick has struggled with drug addiction most of his life. Around the time of his 15th birthday, he'd already been checked into rehab. By the time he was 22, he shared that he had undergone over 17 rehab stays. To avoid treatment, Reiner sometimes chose to live on the street.
